A Cicada Doesn’t Know the Springtime

April 6, 2019

Even in the same plum tree, the shape and the size of the fruits are all different; some are big, some are small, some are round and some are dented.

“I can’t understand why there are such differences,” a cicada says with suspicion.

“Because you crawled out of the ground in June, you only know summer. However, in springtime when you were in the ground, this plum tree was full of white flowers. Then a bunch of bees and butterflies came flying by. Those flowers which were pollinated a lot have become small fruits, while those which were not pollinated as much have become big.”

“How ridiculous!” exclaimed the cicada.

No matter how much the cicada heard the same explanation, it knew no better
